U.K. Highways Agency Extends Airwave Contract (2/20/13)
Airwave announced that the U.K. Highways Agency has extended its current contract for an additional 22 months. The £4.8 million (US$7.3 million) contract was signed in December.
Primarily responsible for managing, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and roads, the Highways Agency uses the dedicated Airwave service to manage traffic and tackle congestion. In addition, they provide information to road users and to improve safety and journey time reliability.
“We have been using the Airwave network since 2005, and continue to benefit from the service, which enables us to communicate between all of our own control rooms and those of other agencies and partners,” said Al Edwards, project manager and sponsor, Highways Agency.
Every Highways Agency patrol vehicle is equipped with an Airwave radio programmed with the shared channels (talk groups) to monitor incidents as they happen. This means that when officers arrive at an incident they are already fully briefed.
