San Francisco Board Approves Motorola Agreement for BayWEB (2/7/12)
The board of supervisors for the city and county of San Francisco adopted a resolution on a 9-1 vote to accept a site access and use agreement with Motorola Solutions.

The agreement is for the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications Systems (BayRICS) to use the San Francisco sites for the Bay Area 700 MHz public safety broadband spectrum. The spectrum is managed and operated by the BayRICS for a 12-year term.

The BayRICS Joint Powers Authority (JPA) approved a 10-year build, operate, own and maintain (BOOM) agreement with Motorola to build a 700 MHz public-safety Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the San Francisco Bay Area in January. The JPA also approved the systems funding plan.

To finalize the radio sites that will be used in the project, a separate agreement between each site-owning agency and Motorola to access and use the sites is required. “Motorola officials indicated that they must have a final site list by Feb. 10,” said Barry Fraser, BayRICS JPA general manager. “I believe most, if not all, jurisdictions will meet that deadline. At that point, Motorola can begin ordering equipment and preparing the sites for installation.”

“The positive vote on BayWEB by the San Francisco board of supervisors paves the way for Motorola Solutions to advance the successful implementation of a 700 MHz LTE network providing true interoperable communications for Bay Area first responders,” said Debora Courtright, vice president, North America government markets, Motorola Solutions. “Motorola believes BayWEB will be a long-term benefit to Bay Area public safety, and we are committed to working with the city and all our partners to deploy this state-of-the-art broadband network in a timely manner.”
