TIA Files Broadband Comments with Public-Safety Suggestions (2/4/10)

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) filed reply comments outlining its positions on a variety of issues raised by the FCC regarding its national broadband plan. Among other issues, the TIA filing said the FCC should promote the development of a broadband interoperable public-safety network capable of protecting all communities in the event of further domestic disasters.

TIA officials said that to best promote interoperability, public-safety agencies should be encouraged to use standardized commercial wireless technologies, consider the benefits of including federal government users on the network, and pursue operational rules that support the use of widely available commercial technologies to the extent that they meet those needs. While TIA believes that building an interoperable broadband public-safety network via a public/private partnership may be a valid approach, TIA officials said that the commission’s recent efforts to evaluate other options for making the D block available for use and determining the most effective and timely way to establish a public-safety network is much needed.
