European 1-1-2 Day Celebrated Thursday (2/5/10)
The second European 1-1-2 Day is 11 February. The emergency number 1-1-2 is common to all 27 countries of the European Union and is used to contact emergency services free.
While surveys have shown that more than none out of 10 Europeans are positive toward the creation and existence of the emergency number, three out of four are unaware of the ability to dial the number when in need of reaching the police, ambulance or fire services. Therefore, events to promote the knowledge and good use of 1-1-2 are organized in several European cities from Portugal to Finland and from Belgium to Bulgaria.
“We are proud that our European emergency services’ leaders are putting this much energy to publicize 1-1-2 during this second European 1-1-2 Day; they deserve our full recognition,” said Olivier Paul-Morandini, founder of the 112 Foundation, a Brussels-based foundation dedicated to the promotion of the European emergency number.
