FCC Extends Sprint Nextel’s BAS Relocation in 28 Markets (2/5/10)
The FCC extended for an additional six months to Aug. 9 Sprint Nextel’s deadline to complete the transition of the broadcast auxiliary service (BAS) to frequencies above 2 GHz in 28 markets. The FCC said it serves the public interest to grant this limited waiver for 28 of the 213 BAS markets nationwide that are required to be relocated by Feb. 8.
The waiver is granted in response to the joint request concerning the BAS relocation filed by Sprint Nextel, the Association for Maximum Service Television (MSTV), the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Dec. 31, a supplement and a Sprint Nextel report to the FCC on the BAS relocation.
Sprint Nextel is required to relocate BAS incumbents in the 1.99 – 2.025 GHz band as part of spectrum it received under the terms of the 800 MHz rebanding order. The relocation originally was supposed to be completed in 2007.
Sprint Nextel is also required to notify the commission upon the completion of BAS relocation in each of the 28 remaining unrelocated markets. The latest delay is the latest in a series of BAS relocation extensions.
