The Sira-Kvina Power Company, which engages in production of renewable energy, chose a 15-site TETRA communications system from DAMM for the replacement of a worn-out MPT 1327 system. The new communications system was delivered by one of DAMM’s partners, 123 Communications.

The power company is one of Norway’s largest, producing 6,300 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy from seven hydro power plants using water from the watercourses from mountains in the southwest of Norway.
Sira-Kvina has an objective of an uptime of its production facilities of 90 percent. And Norwegian law dictates that utility companies must have their private internal communications system able to operate in 72 hours even if regular power supplies are cut off, which sets high demand to operate a reliable and robust communications system.
The TetraFlex infrastructure from DAMM was chosen because it is a highly reliable and flexible system that can be scaled to meet future needs, both for traffic and coverage, the ease of installation and operation, distributed intelligence with no central switch and no single point of failure, and the fact that 123 Communication is a knowledgeable supplier, a company release said.
The supplied TETRA installation consists of 15 sites. Eight outdoor units are mounted in equipment rooms on mountaintops, ensuring outdoor coverage over a vast distance. Seven installations are in tunnels housing the hydroelectric facilities. The system is also fitted with a voice gateway toward the customer’s telephone system and two dispatchers.
All power plant facilities are placed hundreds of meters inside the mountains, and the TetraFlex system has proven suitable for the coverage within tunnels and concrete buildings, with the reuse of existing frequencies from 1999.
A main challenge for the project installation is the remote sites where equipment and personnel must be airlifted by helicopter or transported by snow scooters.
